Scribes Legal Writing Program at The John Marshall Law School

Scribes—The American Society of Legal Writers—will hold a free, two-hour legal writing workshop for law students and legal writing faculty from all Chicago-area law schools. This fast-paced and entertaining program will benefit law review editors, moot court competitors, judicial clerks, and all law students who are learning how to communicate effectively.

Speakers include:
Bryan A. Garner is one of the nation’s most acclaimed speakers on legal writing. His works include Black’s Law Dictionary, Garner’s Modern American Usage, Garner’s Dictionary of Legal Usage, Garner on Language and Writing, The Redbook: A Manual on Legal Style, and Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges.
Joseph Kimble teaches legal writing and legal drafting at Thomas Cooley Law School. His publications include the book Lifting the Fog of Legalese: Essays on Plain Language.
Judge Mark Painter is recognized as an outstanding legal scholar. More than 400 of Judge Painter’s decisions have been published, making him one of the most-published judges ever. Judge Painter is the author of several books, including Write Well: 25 Rules to Improve Your Business and Professional Writing, and another book on plain legal writing, The Legal Writer: 30 Rules for the Art of Legal Writing.
Mark E. Wojcik teaches Lawyering Skills at The John Marshall Law School. He is the author of Illinois Legal Research and the international legal research series editor for Carolina Academic Press.
Anthony Niedwiecki (moderator) is director of the Lawyering Skills Program at The John Marshall Law School and is President-Elect of the Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD).
