Fall 2021 On-Site and Virtual Reference Services

This fall the library reference desk will be staffed by a librarian Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 11:00 to 6:00 and Wednesdays from 12:00 to 7:00. The reference desk is located on the 6th floor of the library. Librarians will also be available virtually by email at law-library@uic.edu and by chat starting at 9:00 Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, we will staff virtual reference from 10:00 to 2:00.

We will continue this schedule of on-site reference as long as the university does not reimplement physical distancing requirements. If the university does reimplement physical distancing requirements, we will continue reference services on a virtual basis.

How Can HeinOnline Help You?

Looking for a law review article, an old federal statute, or a historical treaty? You can find all of these and considerably more in HeinOnline. HeinOnline is a database that is best known for its collection of law reviews and journals—to access a specific journal, click on the catalog tab above the search bar and enter the name of the journal you’re looking for.

As you can see in the image below, HeinOnline also provides access to a wide range of other primary and secondary legal material, including U.S. federal materials, practice area-specific resources, and cross disciplinary resources on topics such as women and the law and slavery in the U.S.A. and abroad. There is a series of helpful videos on Hein’s YouTube page, and if you have questions about using HeinOnline, please visit the reference desk, call us at 312-427-2737 x729, or send us a message using the “Ask a Librarian” function on the library homepage (available M-Th, 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays, 10:00-4:00 during the fall and spring semesters).

Access to Library Resources During Campus Closure

While the UIC John Marshall Law School campus is closed, most law library resources continue to be available remotely. To access article databases or other specialized databases, use the links on the library website to log in with your JMLS username and password. You can continue to access Lexis, Westlaw, Bloomberg Law, and CALI using the individual log-in you set up with those services.

Additionally, law librarians will continue to be available for remote consultation. You can reach us at library@jmls.edu, and we can host one-on-one web conferences as needed.

If you have materials checked out from the law library, do not worry! We have extended the due date on materials through May 31, and we will extend it further if needed.

Please see this guide for a collection of links and more information. If you have questions about specific resources or any other research concerns, contact library@jmls.edu.

Information About the UIC Library and JMLS

A benefit of UIC’s acquisition of John Marshall is access to UIC library resources. In addition to being able to check out materials from UIC libraries, JMLS students, faculty, and staff can access UIC databases and journals. Note that you will need your NetID to access these.

JMLS users also now have access to I-Share. I-Share allows you to search for and request materials that we don’t have at JMLS from participating libraries. Think of it as an expedited interlibrary loan program.

If you have questions about these or any other library-related issues, please reach out to library@jmls.edu.
