Welcome New Students

Welcome new students!  Congratulations on your acceptance to The John Marshall Law School.  The library would like to welcome you for the spring 2013 semester and suggest a few resources that may be helpful as you start your law school career.

Study Guides:  Check out the Guide for 1st Year Students available at http://libraryguides.jmls.edu/firstyearguide.  The guide includes links to resources available via the library such as study aides for all of the first year classes, guides to exam prep and general books designed to help you succeed in your first year of law school.   These guides are all available in the Academic Success Collection on the 6th floor of the library and can be checked out for 3 days.

CALI Lessons: The guide also includes links to relevant CALI lessons.  The CALI Library of Lessons is a collection of over 900 interactive, computer-based lessons covering more than 40 legal education subject areas.  Your library orientation packet contained an authorization code to sign up for a CALI account.  If you need an authorization code, stop by the reference desk on the 6th floor of the library.

Textbooks: The library does not purchase print textbooks or casebooks.  However, you can access downloadable mp3s of your casebooks via AudioCase Files using your JMLS email address.

Study Spaces: When visiting the library, don’t stop at just the 6th floor.  The library is housed on the 6th through 10th floors of the State Street building.  There is a separate library elevator bank apart from the general elevators in the State Street Building that will take you to floors 7-10.  The 8th floor is designated as an ultra-quiet study space where no talking is permitted.  If you wish to study in a group, there are 12 group study rooms available to be reserved in 2 hour blocks.

Get Help: Reference librarians are available to provide assistance in the use of the library including assistance in research and the location of library materials.  Librarians are available at the reference desk on the 6th floor, by phone at 312-427-2737 x729, by email library@jmls.edu, by text message at 312-854-ASK2 (2752) and by instant message from the library homepage (use the “Ask a Librarian” chat box in the lower left corner of the screen).  If you have a in-depth question, request a research appointment with a librarian.

Best wishes as you begin your law school career!  We look forward to getting to know you!
